UPDATE: All gone in an hour
natface:
I am singing in a celebration of French music in a few weeks and I would love it if anyone in New York (or in town) wanted to come watch. It’s a truly beautiful program, featuring one of my all-time favorites, the Cantique de Jean Racine, as well as many more works by Debussy, Ravel, Durufle, all the French dudes. (Even one French lady!)
The concerts are June 15th and 17th, at 8 and 3 pm, respectively. Askbox me if you’d like to come!
This is not quite in Cobble Hill, but walking distance. Plus, music is great.
Brutal mugging on 2nd Place
Dear Neighbor,
On Friday, October 14th between 7pm and 8pm a woman was brutally mugged on 2nd Place near Clinton.
This is the 3rd act of violence against a woman on this street in the last 18 months.
Firstly, if you saw anything or have any information, please report it to the 76th Police Precinct, 191 Union Street (btw Henry and Hicks) - especially if you have access to CCTV footage in the area.
Secondly, it is of great importance that everyone be aware of their surroundings at all times when walking in the neighborhood at any time of day. Carroll Gardens is home to a lot of families, women and children, and therefore, because of its renowned safety, people are not alert to the possibility of attack. It is imperative that we start to pay attention and look out for each other. Take note of any suspicious activity and keep it accessible in the event it is needed.
In addition, it is important to make sure all hedges/bushes are trimmed to ease street visibility, and any street-light outages or “dark spots” be reported to the city for repair/remedy as soon as possible.
I appreciate that the tone of this letter is severe, but the last victim was knocked unconscious and cannot remember anything that happened to her. I’d hate to ever hear of this kind of brutality happening in our neighborhood again.
Lastly, there have also been a slew of bike-thefts locally with bikes locked up in front yards being targeted. Probably best to make sure both wheels are chained to the frame and the whole thing attached to a fence, pole, etc.
Best to my fellow Carroll Garden-ers. Stay alert!

Summer Film Festival
Hey filmmakers and film lovers! People’s Republic of Brooklyn (247 Smith Street) in Carroll Gardens will be hosting a Summer Film Fest every Wednesday starting after May 30, Memorial Day. We want you to show YOUR original contributions directly before we screen old classics like Citizen Kane, Casablanca, etc. We’re looking for original short films, anywhere from 5-20 minutes long (no longer, though). After we show them (one per night) on our back patio, we’ll have a short discussion where you can get feedback from local Brooklynites! Filmmakers will also be rewarded with drinks on us. If you’re interested, please email me at ndotsimons[at]gmail[dot]com and attach a description of the film(s) you want to show — and if you can attach a preview or clip, too, that would be great.
Locals — please come to the bar for the first in the series on June 1st and kick back, relax, and enjoy new and old artists’ work alike.
Thanks! Hope to hear from you talented folk soon.
Best, Natasha
St Patrick’s Day, Local Style
Hey all,
I’m a bartender at People’s Republic of Brooklyn (247 Smith Street at Douglass St) and we are having an Irish themed bash, naturally. We’ll be serving a FREE corned beef and cabbage buffet, as well as cheap specials on Irish potent potables all night. Irish shots, for $3, are Jameson, Patron, and coffee. Delicious. See you there!
Best,
Natasha
